WILCOX HOUSE

When the Wilcox family wanted to add a porch to their typical mid-century tract home they originally only had ideas for an entry to their home, but they ended up entering a growing relationship with Zawalski Construction.

The original assignment was to enhance an otherwise plain exterior. The task was to design a porch with an exterior that had depth and visual appeal while complimenting the existing frontage. After many drawings the Wilcox family decided on a design that bumped out the porch beyond the original footprint of the house to provide a covered sitting area with a full view of the front yard.

To add years of worry-free maintenance, the porch was made from Trex composite decking and railing.

Being so happy with how Zawalski Construction added more room to their front porch, the Wilcoxes invited us in to see what we could do about the lack of space in their kitchen. We immediately noticed how boxed in we felt by the outdated space planning that had the prerequisite 4 walls in every room. What they needed was the removal of one of the bearing walls to establish a better flow and create more useable space.

Down came the wall dividing the kitchen and living room and in came the new kitchen complete with custom cabinets and a new open layout that made entertaining easier. In the wall’s place we installed a header beam and made it feel original to the space by finishing it off with crown moulding.

To ensure that the contemporary design of the kitchen stands up for decades to come we hid the GFCI receptacles under the cabinets and the granite counter top to create a streamlined, less-is-more environment.

From the welcoming entry at the front porch, to the spaciousness of the newly remodeled kitchen, the Wilcox family is enjoying having people over so they can share their new space with those they love.
